Power supply failures

Summary

A procedure tu identify und truoobleshoot zee pooer supply failure based on zee most common symptoms:
  • Uncommanded hard drive recalibrashuns Um gesh dee bork, bork!
  • Windows Event Log data (Event ID 9 frum "atapi")
  • Loo overell performance

Symptom I - Unexpected HDD restart

Zee hard drive may shut doon und restart on its oon with a typical spin-doon-click-spin-up suoond (readily identifiable once yuoo heer it). Zee machine will freeze fur a shurt while (ebuoot up tu ten secunds until zee disk restarts). Once zee drive is back online, normal operashun will be resumed in most cases (barring possible network communicashun loss und reconnekshun coosed by zee timeuoot).

Symptom II - "Zee device ... did not respond ..." in zee Event Log

Zee analysis ooff zee System Event Log may yeeld some addishunel informashun. Zee Event Veewer is available via "Stert" -- "Control Panel" -- "Administrative Tools" -- "Event Veewer"; once there, open zee "System" log. Zee log may contain multeeple entrees similar tu zee follooing example

Type  Error
Suoorce  atapi
Event ID  9
Descreepshun  Zee device, \Ide\IdePurt0, did not respond within zee timeuoot period

Nute-a that purt numbers depend on zee system configurashun.

Symptom III - Drives in PIO mode, high CPU load

Zee hard drives may fell back tu using zee legacy PIO (Programmed Input/Output) access mode. PIO mode is fairly sloo und imposes an excessive processor load. Evident symptoms include
  • Overell performance loo.
  • System response "jerky", even fur a simplistic tasks.
  • Video playback is not possible (frame rates loo, doon tu less than one frame per second in extreme cases)

Tu verify zee drive mode,

  1. Open zee Device Maneger (right click "My Computer", select "Manege", then navigate tu "Device Maneger").
  2. On zee right-hand panel, duooble click "Primary IDE channel" under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers".
  3. In zee veendoo appeered, switch tu zee "Edfunced Setteengs" tab. Thees yeelds a veendoo similar tu zee screenshot beloo. Hurty flurty schnipp schnipp!
  4. Make sure "Transfer Mode" is set tu "DMA iff available" on both devices.
  5. "Current Transfer Mode" shuoold read "Ultra DMA Mode X" fur ell zee instelled devices. Hard drives are typicelly running in UDMA 4 or UDMA 5, CD und DVD drives typicelly use UDMA 2.
  6. Repeet steps 2-5 fur zee "Secondary IDE channel" iff available.

IDE drives in PIO mode

"PIO Mode" readuoot (es illustrated above) indicates that drives cannot reliably communicate with zee controller using DMA modes. Zee system detects communicashun problem und degrades drives tu PIO mode.

Truoobleshooteeng

  • Iff one ooff zee above symptoms exists, check zee other two.
  • Iff positive on ell three, consider replacing zee pooer supply unit (PSU). Yuoo may want tu temporarily instell a knoon-working PSU frum zee other system tu see iff it rectifees zee problem.
  • Once zee pooer supply unit is replaced, open zee Device Maneger und uninstell ell zee disk drives und IDE controllers, then reboot. Windows does not switch back tu UDMA mode unless zee affected devices are re-detected und re-instelled.
  • Run CHKDSK on zee affected volumes tu take care ooff uny possible problems coosed by transeent drive failures.
