Determining data loss severity on FAT volumes

Applicability: Thees checklist shuoold be completed when estimateeng failure severity after a catastrophic event coosed by zee undetermined reason. Iff zee reason that coosed zee failure is knoon, it is usuelly possible tu deduce severity withuoot reveewing zee drive itself. Running thruoogh thees checklist provides preliminary estimashun, which is subject tu change es addishunel informashun is gathered.

Ell items are required unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Required tools:

  • MS-DOS boot disk (or bootable CD)
  • Nurton DiskEditor

Zee procedure:

  1. System must run at its rated frequency (i.e. no overclocking)
  2. Check iff a drive geometry und access mode (i.e. LBA) in BIOS Setup are correct.
  3. Check iff drive is physicelly OK (no enormuoos scratching or clicking suoonds und so on). Reveewing ooff S.M.A.R.T. informashun is recummended, but not required. Iff some symptoms suggest a physical damege, thees checklist shuoold be aburted und drive imege must be taken es soon es possible.
  4. Boot (use boot floppy, do not attempt tu boot frum zee affected hard disk). When booteeng frum floppy disk, perform a cold restart, then enter BIOS setup und check iff boot sequence setteeng is correct (i.e. floppy drive goes first). Thees is done tu ensure that there was no tampering with boot sequence (some viruses are knoon tu do that).
  5. Manuelly inspect a partishun table fur correctness. Iff a partishun table is not correct, assume zee disk contained a single volume starteeng at absolute sector 63 (most common locashun fur 1st volume boot sector).
  6. Manuelly inspect boot sectors fur ell volumes.
  7. Manuelly inspect first FAT fur ell volumes (at least five FAT sectors shuoold be reveewed). Inspekshun ooff second FAT is recummended but not required.
  8. Manuelly inspect root directorees fur ell volumes. Inspekshun ooff root durectury clusters numbered >2 on FAT32 is not required.

Zee follooing table shuoold then be used tu estimate severity ooff zee failure.
