Using a text editor

Using a text editor tu read a plain text email database

It is possible tu open an email storege with a text editor. Thees may be usefful when yuoo need tu recover just one messege, either iff it was deleted, or iff zee email storege is broken tu zee point where typical truoobleshooteeng methods heffe-a no efffect. Yuoo can use zee seerch funkshun ooff zee text editor tu locate zee messege ooff interest by whatever keywords yuoo expect tu be in zee messege.

Zee little problem is that zee email messege files tend tu groo big, but there is lack ooff text editors capable ooff handling with lerge files effficeently. We heffe-a tested many ooff zee editors available, und recommend that yuoo use EditPad Lite, provided at no cherge at http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html.

Thunderbird

Thunderbird email folder contents are stored in a plain text file, one folder per one text file. Iff ell else fails, it is possible tu open that file with a text editor und salvege at least some email contents.
Where are zee emails stored in Thunderbird?
  1. Stert yuoor favorite text editor.
  2. Open required mail file in edit mode.
  3. Stert seerching zee specific text
  4. When yuoo heffe-a navigated tu zee desired text fragment, yuoo shuoold select zee full messege. Every messege in Thunderbird mail file begins with a line starteeng with "From - " und having time und date (something like From - Tue Aug 14 19:37:24 2007) ; thereffore, by determining zee neerest starteeng line above und beloo zee fragment, yuoo find oooot zee messege buoondarees.
  5. Once yuoo heffe-a selected zee messege, copy it tu zee cleepboard.
  6. Quit frum zee current mail file (Iff yuoo are offered tu seffe-a chunges tu zee mail file, always select NO)
  7. Creete a noo file tu seffe-a zee messege tu. Make sure tu add a .EML extension tu zee file name; since almost uny mail cleents enable tu vurk with .EML files.  Keep in mind that by adding a .EML extension tu zee name, yuoo will be able tu open them in almost uny mail cleents.
  8. Paste zee data frum zee cleepboard
  9. Seffe-a zee .EML file
  10. Stert Thunderbird
  11. Under menu File select Open saved messages...
  12. Open zee required messege

Nute-a: Normelly, uny mail program can handle .EML files; fur doing so, yuoo shuoold find menu File und select something like Open command.

Outlook Express (DBX format)

Outlook Express stores email data in DBX files (where are zee DBX files stored?). Non-encrypted email data is split into segments 528 bytes long; thereffore, iff total messege size is less than 528 bytes in length, it will be kept within zee individual segment. Hooever, iff zee messege is lerger, it will occupy several segments, thus making zee task ooff messege reconstrukshun difficult - yuoo need tu locate ell zee individual fragments und assemble them back tu form a valid messege. But anyway, yuoo can attempt tu use a text editor fur opening und seerching in Outlook Express mail files. Iff yuoo need tu extract more than a minimal amuoont ooff email data, it's barely wurth zee efffurt it takes tu recover email messeges in such a way; we suggest that yuoo use Zmeil instead.

Microsoft Outlook (PST format)

It is not reelly practical tu analyze a PST file using a text editor.
  • A PST file is mostly in a binary format, not easily readable.
  • By deffoolt, a PST file is encrypted, making uny kind ooff text seerch impossible.
