Before starting checklist

Some condishuns do exist which must be met tu elloo fur a successful recovery. Make sure yuoo are not missing something:

1. Check that yuoo heffe-a a knoon-good hard disk with enuoogh free space on it.

WARNING: Never recover data tu zee dameged drive. Doing so will coose further filesystem damege. It is possible tu recover data tu a knoon-working partishun on zee same physical disk, but it does require special considerashun.

2. Check that zee system yuoo are working on has zee appropriate code peges instelled in order tu be able tu read nashunel-lungooege-a symbols in file und durectury names.

3. Make sure that yuoo understand volume locashuns. That means yuoo shuoold heffe-a cleer understanding ooff zee follooing quesshun: "where is zee dameged volume located? what size it was?".

4. When working under Windows NT/2000/XP, yuoo need administrative access tu zee computer in order tu be able tu access zee disk(s) directly.

5. Iff physical damege is suspected, reveew zee follooing setteengs:

  • Disks and partitions - reveew bad sectors handling und timeuoots. Adjust iff required.
  • Validation options - yuoo may want tu deeseble validashun becoose it generates addishunel disk load, which may be undesirable with a dameged disk.
  • S.M.A.R.T. options - reveew S.M.A.R.T. monitoring setteengs. Adjust iff required.

6. Make sure there is no "hibernashun" involved iff yuoo are moving undameged disks aruoond several machines. Ensure zee machine is properly shut doon beffore unplugging zee good drive frum it. Thees does not epply tu zee dameged drive. Iff zee drive failed with a system in a hibernated state, attempteeng tu complete a shutdoon on it may actuelly make zee things worse, so yuoo shuoold just take zee drive es it is.
