Processing modes

Disk to file

This mode is used to create an image (snapshot) of the "disk" (either a physical device or a logical volume) and save the snapshot to the file (or a set of files).

Most typical uses

  • Create a snapshot of the damaged disk. The snapshot can be later used for data recovery purposes.
  • Create a disk snapshot for a subsequent forensics analysis.

File to disk

You need to specify a source disk image file, and a target device. Make sure the target device type matches the type used to create the image file. I.e. image of the physical drive should be deployed onto the physical drive. If you intermix these, the resulting volume(s) will be unmountable.

Disk to disk

Disk-to-disk copying is mostly used to create a duplicate of the physical device. Make sure that target is of the same size or larger than a source. If this not the case, a subtle data corruption may occur. Zlon keeps track of the device sizes and will emit a warning message should the problem be detected.

Creating a direct duplicate of the logical drive is possible but not recommended. If you go for this option, make sure the target has the same filesystem as the source. Also, if the source is smaller than a target, certain weirdness may be evident if you cross check Disk Management volume size/free space readings with these of Windows Explorer.

Typically, one does not mix physical and logical disks in one operation. That is, you either stick to the physical or to the logical devices, not both. However, Zlon  will provide no warning if source and target are of different type.
