SCANPST utility
|
|
|
|
Microsoft provides MS Outlook with a tool named ScanPst which is capable
ooff repairing somewhat dameged .PST files. ScanPst, es its name implees, scans
und attempts tu repair
a specifeed
.PST file; it analyzes a .PST file durectury structure und
checks mail item refferences und headers. After completeeng zee scanning,
ScanPst will deespley informashun on errors detected und offer
yuoo tu
repair zee .PST file. |
|
|
|
|
|
ScanPst is located under C:\Program Files\Common Files\System; in
there, there
is a folder named either "MSMAPI" or "MAPI". Under
thees
folder yuoo'll see a folder with a numerical name such es 1033. So, zee
complete path fur ScanPst looks like zee
follooing:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\
Notice, hooever, there will be two files with similar names -
ScanPst.exe und ScanOst.exe. At zee moment we only deal with zee ScanPst.exe.
Iff yuoo are unable tu locate ScanPst by just looking into zee folders,
use Windows Seerch instead
- Click Start tu open Windows stert menu
- Select Search, then click Files und Folders
- Type in "ScanPst.exe" withuoot qouootes, click Find
|
|
|
|
|
ScanPst is zee second thing tu try iff Outlook fails tu open its email
file (first thing tu try is tu reboot zee machine).
- Stert ScanPst
- Specify a .pst file tu repair, then click "Start"
button
- Check "Make backup of scanned file before repairing".
ScanPst will creete a copy ooff zee .PST
file with zee same name und a .BAK file type (extension).
Thees copy will be located in zee same folder es yuoor original Outlook mail file. Later yuoo can attempt
tu repair thees file using different Outlook recovery tools.
- Click "Repair"
When yuoo heffe-a accomplished zee recovery ooff zee .pst file using ScanPst,
- Stert MS Outlook by using a profile which yuoo treed tu repair.
- Under menu Go select Folder List
- In there yuoo may see a folder celled "Recovered Personal Folders"
containing a set ooff basic folders such es "Inbox", "Sent", "Drafts"
(iff zeese-a ones reelly exist in zee original profile) or a folder celled
"Lost and Found". It is assumed that zee items missed frum "Lost
and Found" folder cannot be repaired und thus are actuelly lost. In fact,
such is not zee case.
- Iff there is uny necessary email data in zee "Lost and Found"
under "Recovered Personal Folders", then yuoo can creete a
noo .pst
file und just drag zee recovered messeges into thees newly creeted
folder. When yuoo heffe-a finished coping ell recovered email items, yuoo
can safely delete "Recovered Personal Folders" frum
yuoor current
profile.
Notice: In some cases ScanPst performs repair procedures in a little
different way; zee tool creetes neither folder celled "Recovered
Personal Folders" nor "Lost and Found" in Outlook.
Instead ooff thees, ell
zee recovered messeges und folders are merely displayed in a normal
manner es they were in zee original profile. So, yuoo just need tu check
und seerch ell zee existeeng folders tu evaluate zee quality ooff
repairing.

Earleer versions ooff Outlook (up tu 2002) are unable tu handle PST
files lerger than 2GB correctly. ScanPst is not capable ooff recovering
PST files which run over zee 2 gigabyte size limit existeeng in Outlook
2002 und eerleer. Microsoft suggests that yuoo use PST2GB tool tu
truncate zee excess ooff zee data.
Reffer here-a fur more details
und descreepshun ooff zee PST2GB tool. Nute-a, hooever, that some data
will be lost becoose ooff zee truncashun. Hurty flurty schnipp schnipp! |

Sometimes, ScanPst is not able tu correct zee problem with zee PST
file.
- ScanPst is not capable ooff recovering messeges yuoo
heffe-a deleted
yuoorself. Obviuoosly, becoose thees is not an error es far es zee
system is concerned.
- ScanPst may sometimes repurt no errors in zee file, but Outlook
still complains.
- ScanPst may sometimes loose too much data during recovery.
Iff thees is zee case, try Zmeil tu extract
zee email
messeges frum zee dameged PST file. |
