Runnung ZAR ver 8.3 build 25 purchased on 02/05/2008 to recover data on a WD MyBook 500GB using USB connection and Vista on a Dell XPS 420. After 15H 19M 6S there was a pop up window stating: " Error... not possible to continue... Thread fault IdentThread".

Below is the logfile (notepad would not open the log - to big - had to download EditPad Lite, which worked fine):

I see two likely possibilities,

- There was a bug in this area, which is now believed to be fixed (as of recent build 29 at http://www.z-a-recovery.com/zar-83-029.exe).

- If there are too many bad sectors on a drive, then it runs out of memory. Did you see any red dots in the volume map while it was scanning? Keep an eye on it next time. If there are many, turn off "Avoid repeated retries" in the runtime control panel. Alternatively you can click "Forget bad sectors" which should relinqish the memory. However, if there are so many bad sectors that memory gets exhausted, the drive is probably beyond repair.

So I'd say you download the new version and retry.

Alexey-
Build 29 worked much better. Ran it with the default settings and was able to recover the 5,425 files that I wanted - mostly photos dating back to 1985.:)

Here is the report:
