View Full Version : cannot find logfile

Hello, you and your product both seem very reasonable. I have read many of the forum posts. During some problems you refer to the logfile. I installed your program on my disc 2 partition N: and am running it. I cannot find the logfile on c: or N: or anywhere else.
I am trying to check and recover "my documents" from a 20gig c: xp2 partition on a ata maxtor disk that stopped booting. It is now in place as disk 3 and I have copied most of the other partitions from it without trouble before finding ZAR. I am using the newer 30 version of your prog as the 8.3 version got 5 hours in without significant results. I am now 16 hours in and still at the same place as both achieved after about an hour.
The clock ticks onwards. The raw scan full is at 99% and has been there for 15 hours. The cpu is using 80-99%, there are no more seeks. I assume your algorithms are working, but for how long?? Filesystem type is not known yet and has identified no files and no directories so far.
I filtered out system files and deleted files, so the volume sector map has scattered dots all over but lots of white. It has only 4 red dots but 2 are at the start.
I ticked for ntfs support, BUT it is possible that I configured the broken c: partition disk originally as Fat32. Before refusing to boot, there was about 8gig "empty" space on the disk.
After 16 hours, maybe 35 when you read this, should I abort again and retry without ticking ntfs support?
I expected to see the logfile in N:/zar/
I can send a screenshot of the detailed operation, but it is 90k for both segments.
Just for info, I am running from a disc which used "xxclone" originally last year to copy the original c partition to my new replacement disc. The boot sector then gives the option to boot from either disc. The original disc became unrecognisable, last week but still in bios. The new disc has booted without problem, and can see the partitions on the first disc. The original c partition appears as raw unformatted. The maxtor diagnostic shows it is failing and would be replaced but is out of warranty.
Thank you for being there.

Abort it.
Start ZAR again, then click "Advanced Configuration". In there, under "General"
click "Revert to default settings"
change "Normal logging" to "Extended logging (debug)"
check the name for the log file
click OK to close configuration
restart same as previouslyIn "Normal logging" mode the log file output is buffered to increase processing speed. So if something fails within ZAR, parts or all of the log will be lost. Changing this to "extended logging" disables buffering, so the log file should reflect the processing in real time.

Thanks, have now restarted,

Ok, I am now back to 99% as before, the logfile has stopped growing at 2418kb.
some pdf and some jpeg files are mentioned, it is fat32. Filesystem type is still "not known yet" and no directories or files. Looks like previous situation.
How long should I leave it and what do you reccomend?
Thank you.

Open the log file, and post last, say, 50 lines of it here, excluding lines about "memory status" and "cache hit ratio", if any. It is not necessary to stop ZAR to do this.

Ok now try this
1. Kill it again
2. In "Advanced Configuration", under "General" disable "Autosave", click OK to close config.
3. In "Runtime control panel", clear "avoid repeated retries"
4. Try again

I have restarted, using the newer version .30 and not filtering out all the system files. I have also used the drive letter method instead of the disk.partition description. I may have also told it to use fat32.
So far it is working through (parsing) both directories and files and is 1/3 done. There are loads of files but we shall see at the end.
Progress!!

thank you,
I have now recovered some files.
I did not tick for validate during the process, but a couple I have looked at seem complete.
Since you look after and care about your customers, although I do not need any more files recovering, I shall buy your ZAR programme and tell my friends.
thank you again

So that's that thing we fixed in 30th build again. My bad, should have checked what build are you running earlier.

I was running your standard build 8.3? earlier, which stopped being useful at 99%. The successful one, after different instructions by me, was the version 30.
