have simpletech portable hard drive. accidental quick format but was able to restore files using ZAR. however files were originally encrypted (AES-128 bit) using simpletech's storagesync software but unsure how to decrypt now since storagesync doesn't see restored files

We never worked with StorageSync, so that requires some consideration. I'm going to take a look at that software, and will be back to you then.

Do you have the two files available, "drive.lst" and "drive.dat", among the recovered files?

yes, i can see those 2 files in the zar file scan. i am restoring them now and hopefully storagesync will recognize the restored files. will keep you posted. thanks

So, this is what I suggest.
1. Make two empty folders under your C: drive, or whatever you use, let's say that be C:\TEST and C:\REC
2. On a Start Menu, click Run, type in "SUBST T: C:\TEST" without quotes, click OK.
3. Repeat above but type "SUBST R: C:\REC"
(note this assumes you do not use drives T: and R: )
The above creates two "virtual" drives backed up by their respective directories. These are not a "real", e.g. ZAR cannot handle them, but these are good enough for StorageSync.
4. Now run StorageSync and back up some small set of arbitrary files onto drive T:. This provides a known-good folder structure how the StorageSync requires it.
5. Finally, you need to create a similar structure on the drive R: from the files you recovered; then have StorageSync perform a restore from drive R:.
