Hello Alexey,

Could you please publish a little more advice concerning the advanced option box to Enable NTFS version 1.2

There is help text available but we are not sure how to interpret your recommendations.
.
Would it be possible to publish a tiny "truth table" with the most recent MS :( file- and operating systems ( including XP and Vista of course) together with your recommendations for correct setting of this important switch ?

Your help is always appreciated. :)

Merlin

(btw, We are still suffering from system hanging for no apparent reason.)

What are NTFS versions:

NTFS 1.2 is from Windows NT 4.
Windows 2000 and up uses NTFS 3.0 an up.
Also, combinations are possible. If you format the volume with NT4, and then mount it into Windows 2000, the volume gets "upgraded", and part of its records are converted from 1.2 to 3.0. The records are updated on the "as needed" basis, so if you do not touch the files, there may be still records in 1.2 format.

How this works:

We have two algorithms to rebuild a directory tree, let's call them A and B.

Method A - Recognizes any version of NTFS records. Slow. Uses more memory.
Method B - Requires that at least some small number of records are of NTFS 3.0 or newer format. If "Enable NTFS 1.2 support" is OFF, only B is used.
If ON, both methods are applied and results combined.

What to use

You need to "Enable NTFS 1.2 support" if the drive either comes from a Windows NT 4.0 machine, or the machine that was upgraded from NT 4.0 less than a week ago.

Hopefully that clarifies?

Re: intermittent failures, with a latest (build 36 (http://www.z-a-recovery.com/zar-83-036.exe)) version still faulty?
