I am attempting to recover data from a Dell Inspiron 4100. It has a corrupted system file and will only boot from CD. I have a portable hard drive that I can run ZAR from, but I cannot "see" this drive on the DOS recovery screen - only C: and D: (CD-ROM) are recognized.

Is there any way to add a drive to this system so that I can do a recovery?

If possible, get it the other way round - get the drive out of the laptop, and use either a 2.5"-to-3.5" converter (perferred), or a USB removable drive box to attach the drive to a desktop system.

If not possble, you can try a BartPE (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) to get Windows to start from CD, but I would oly recommend it as a last resort.

Right after I posted I received a reply post from Dec. 2007 (an autoreply?) that recommended some converters to run the laptop drive in a desktop. I'll give this a try. Great forum. Thanks.
