I am so happy to have discovered Zar! I lost 378 images when my computer abruptly lost its connection with the card reader. I am running Windows XP and have an Olympus Camedia MAUSB-10 card reader 01A2829M2A (Olympus Stylus 1000 camera, if you need that). When attempting to recover the images, card reader was not among the list. I don't see how to access Options to add it. I am running ZAR with a selected decice that is removable, but isn't the right one. I am afraid to exit in case it might affect the data on the disc. The light on the card reader is not blinking.\

ZAR does not write to the disk, except when copying the files.
It is safe to abort at any point.
With regard of the options to try, check this:
Start ZAR, click "Advanced Configuration".
In there, open "Disks and partitions" tab.
On top of the window, switch between "Disk access via physical devices" and "Disk access via logical drives".See the screenshot -

i've done that and i still havent been able to find any device for my camera (Canon Powershot S2). it's the same with other recovery programs too. windows recognizes it but ZAR doesnt. i dont know if I'm doing anything wrong.

You need a card reader then. Remove the card from a camera and use a card reader. Camera may use some specific protocol/driver which may not allow the direct access. A card reader device allows direct acccess to the card contents, which is required for recovery.

i am currently running ZAR on another computer with the same camera and it seems to be running fine. if the other computer fails to retrieve any photos i'll be sure to get a card reader. thank you.

Could you please clarify what the difference is between the two systems (so one works and the other does not)?
Operating system versions different?
Camera software installed on both?

the one system that works is a desktop computer with Windows XP. it has a smaller hard drive but is a more concrete system, as it doesn't crash as often and is generally more reliable.
the other system is a new HP laptop with Windows XP. it has a larger hard drive with more information on it. while using ZAR, it crashed regularly and is not as concrete as my desktop.
other than that, both of my systems are the same and the camera driver is the same on both.
i have retrieved all my photos using my desktop computer and am very thankful for ZAR!

Ahem, so we conclude it was due to something in the system causing the general instability. Well, at least it worked out good.
