I have my digital camera hooked up via USB and selected as the device from which I want to recover, but when I proceed to the "volume analysis in progress" window nothing happens at all, i.e. "current operation and its progress" remains at 0%. Last night I let it go for 10 hours this way and nothing changed.

Either ZAR locks up, or there is some problem when reading the card.
Try rebooting anything involved. Power down all the equipment, including the camera, and then turn back on.
If this does not work, try switching between "physcial" and "logical" disk reader modes. For more details please refer to this post (screenshots included) (http://z-a-recovery.com/data-recovery-forum/showpost.php?p=12&postcount=2).
If still no result, you should use the card reader device to access the camera memory. If this does not help, it would indicate a card is physically damaged, requiring a repair before attempting recovery.
By the way, it might be helpful if you provide the camera model and the operating system version you use.
