I used ZAR to recover my external hard drive today and it worked all right, except that all the folders and files whose names contain Chinese characters would first show on the list as ???? and then can not be copied/recovered to my hard drive.

Could anybody help me to solve this problem?

Thanks so much!

P.S. I am using the Windows XP Home Edition (English version).

Hi,
i had the same problem like u, i guess this program does not support unicode?

anyway i found a way to let u restore these files.
try find an application from Microsoft itself called "AppLocale"
then install it and run that AppLocale
from there select which program u want to run, in this case "zar.exe"
then select your language, i chose "CHinese Simplified"
and it actually able to restore all chinese (traditional, simplified) and even japanese files ....

hope this help

*or maybe u can change ur system unicode from english to chinese under your control panel regional and language options there

cheers

We're trying to work it out now, but basically

On a Windows installation on which language matches that of the filesystem you should probably be fine. I.e. if you have Chinese files, you install Chinese Windows, NOT English.

For an English Windows and Chinese filesystem, you need to check the following:

Open Control Panel, Regional and Language options.
In Languages tab, make sure "Install files for East Asian languages" is checked.
In "Advanced" tab, set the "language version of the non-unicode programs" to the language you need (Simplified Chinese I think).
Restart the system.
