I accidentically reformatted my SanDisk 1.0GB CF card (camera is a Canon XT) and lost about 60 photos. After the deletion I took about 10 photos so I understand that some may be overwritten. I hooked up the camera to the USB drive and let it run for several hours and it detected over 1,000 images, including jpeg and gif files - some were old jpeg files already on my computer taken from another camera. Obviously I am doing something wrong but I don't know what. Please help! Thanks. I am thinking it did not read my memory card??

You scanned your hard drive instead of a camera. You should choose camera memory card (smaller size) rather than a hard disk (bigger size) when prompted to select a physical device to recover.
If the memory card is not in the list of the avalable devices, you need to use a card reader device to access the card.
