why is it that zar hangs exactly at 50 percent every time I run the scan and the hdd led goes out? I've tried toggling the settings to no avail.

If it hangs 50% into "raw scan", then most likely there is a problem with a drive. Try attaching the drive to a different machine, try to connect directly if using USB enclosure, and that's about it.

It does the same thing on the 2nd computer. I thought it may be the drive and possibly the psu but it can't be because hdd software diagnostics report no issue and the led light doesn't go out during those scans. Is it possible that zar is stopping at a particular point on the disk (whatever is at 50%) as it is too coincidental to be happening at 50% every single time and I've ran it about 20 times now on different computers. I've clicked on the skip bad sectors tab and lowered the time out to 200ms so is there anything else I can try please?
Thanks |

If you do not have a USB or whatever bus "converter" involved,
and ZAR always stops at 50%, this points to some sort of the drive problem. Based on the fact there was never a raw scan issue matching what you describe. Set logging to "Extended logging (debug)" in "Advanced Configuration", and retry once again Then ZIP the log file (C:\Program Files\ZAR\logfile.txt) and email it to me at development@z-a-recovery.com

It is important that you wait for at least half an hour before aborting it and archiving the log, to make sure if there is a timing issue, it still gets logged.
Avoid relying on the "Timeout" setting in ZAR, because if a driver behaves badly for some reason, it may not relinquish the control back even if the timeout is configured (although this is more of an issue with digital cameras).

It is a seagate external usb 500gb hard drive. It displays as "RAW" in My Computer properties for that drive (K) Seagate's software "File Recovery for Windows DEMO" is happily scanning the drive so there is no drive failure. I am not purchasing their licence as it is too expensive and I have already got yours. I am also trying "Recover My Files" which is also happily scanning and displaying recovered files as it goes along but it's not naming them which is why I wanted to keep to your software. So again, it can't be a drive issue as 2 software are working on the drive without any hanging or hesitation. I will try it again after the aforementioned scans have completed and get back to you.

Now this is weird. I decided to run ZAR concurrent with Seagate's File Recovery for Windows and it didn't hang, it actually went onto 51% and beyond. It seems to be going well (so far) <confused>

zar froze at the next stage after the initial scan and hung. Couldn't use the other recovery program either until I switched off the Hdd. I'm having to use the other recovery program which has so far recovered 107709 files and has a smoke alarm next to the hard drive just in case lol.
