Email recovery tutorial

Summary - email recovery with Zmeil

This tutorial describes the recovery of the deleted email messages or the corrupt email database using Zmeil. The tutorial consists of five simple steps.

Step 1 - Download, install, then launch Zmeil

Download and install Zmeil just like you do with any regular program.

  1. Download Zmeil now
  2. When the download is done, run the file you have just downloaded.
  3. The wizard will guide you through the installation.
  4. Zmeil will run once the installation is done, displaying the window like the one below:

  1. Click "Next >>" button.

Step 2 - Specify the message database file(s) to recover

Zmeil attempts to locate the message databases for known email client programs automatically. If this fails, the list of the databases will be empty. In this case, use "Add file" or "Search" buttons to add the required message database files to the list. Typically, the list will be pre-populated as shown below. Zmeil automatically locates the email database files for the most common email clients, namely Microsoft Outlook, MS Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Eudora, or TheBat!

  1. Mark the message database files you want to recover.
  2. Set  the appropriate source format.
  3. Click "Next >>" button.

Step 3 - Specify where to place recovered files

  1. Select the appropriate output type. Note: Export to Outlook is only available for the Outlook (.pst) source.
  2. Click "Next >>" button.

Step 4 - Recovery run

This stage is fully automatic - no action required on your part. Once the process is completed, Zmeil will automatically switch to the next screen.

Step 5  - Select the messages to recover

  1. Mark messages to recover by clicking their corresponding checkboxes (use context menu, "Select everything").
  2. Click "Next>>"

Step 6  - View recovered messages

Depending on output type:
  • .eml files: You need to open the folder where the recovered messages were placed, then double click the .eml file. This will open the message in your email software. For more details, please refer "opening recovered messages".
  • UNIX mailboxes: Import the recovered messages to Thunderbird
  • Export to Outlook : Start Microsoft Outlook and look in  a new folder named "Recovered messages" under "Personal folders".

Our customers say

This small piece of software, within minutes of downloading, made me the happiest guy in the world. My camera did something weird to my SmartMedia card, rendering it useless. Upon card insertion, the camera and subsequent computers asked if I wished to format the card. I did NOT format the card, because I had just spent 2 hours taking promo pictures for my business in lots of different locations, and figured SOMEbody could figure it out... [...] When I found this program, although it took a minute or two to figure out which "number" went with my USB SmartMedia reader, I clicked a few buttons, and this program went right to work. It took about 5-10 seconds per picture to recover - I was ELATED! Thank you for providing this piece of software for free. I figure the least I could do was come back to say thank you.
