Digital image recovery options

Maximum reasonable image size

Set this to the maximum reasonable size of the image file your camera creates. Any image file larger than that will be trimmed down to the maximum limit allowed. This helps to save time when rendering large images.

End-of-file detection

If it is not possible to determine the exact size of the file during the recovery, initial recovery pass will bring up the files which are larger than original ones. ZAR then attempts to cut the extra data off the files. For this, three methods can be used
  • Image analysis. This one is slowest of all but produces the most precise results. This is the preferred option unless it does not work for some reason or the analysis speed is unacceptably slow.
  • Marker analysis. Faster than image analysis, but less precise and only works with JPEG format. For all other formats, this just disables the file trimming (i.e. same as Leave as is for all files except JPEGs).
  • Leave as is. Disables the automatic trim feature completely. The recovered files will tend to be of excessive size.

Other options (not selectable)

There may be a few of other options on this page, which are locked at certain settings. These are reserved for a future implementation and you cannot change them. This is by design.

Our customers say

I have accidentaly deleted all pictures from a CF (CompactFlash) card. I was looking for some recovery tools. I tried FAT-based tools, but they could not get back all the pictures (my camera might use some strange image storing mechanism). Then I found Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery, which found all my pictures and even those deleted half year ago (and not yet overwritten). [...] Thumbs up!. Thanks, guys for this freeware! User interface is not exciting, but who cares? It does the job, and that's it.
