Save files

Disk subsystem considerations

The save file contains certain information about the disk subsystem configuration of the machine performing the run. Should the disk configuration change, ZAR may fail to load the file. Hence, it is recommended to set up the disks as required for the actual recovery before the first attempt.

Autosave

ZAR will save the data gathered during the run to the AUTOSAVE subfolder, created automatically where the program is installed. In case an error occurs during the save the run is continued after an appropriate error message. In such a case you can save the information collected during the run when it is done (when a file and folder tree is displayed, see below).

Autosave feature produces an "abridged" save file, only containing a raw scan data. File and folder tree information is not stored (because it is not known by that time).

Saving state manually

Once the analysis is finished and the file and folder tree is displayed, it is possible to save the analysis results for later reuse. This is done, obviously, by clicking the "Save" button.

Manual save produces a "full" save file, containing all the data available.

Loading saved information

To load a previously saved file, use the "Load saved file" button on the first screen. Provide the location of the file to load when prompted. Three outcomes are possible.
  • Once the "full" save file is loaded, the file and folder tree will be displayed and the background validation starts if enabled in options. The files should then be marked and copied normally.
  • In case the "abridged" save file is loaded, a message will appear stating that the load process was successful and recovery should then be carried as usual. The data will be used automatically.
  • ZAR fails to match the physical device due to the disk configuration change. If it is not possible to continue, various error messages may be emitted and the program will shut down. Typically, there is no workaround in such a situation and the recovery have to be restarted (and disks rescanned).

Our customers say

No messing about, does exactly what it says on the tin!!! Tried three other freeware solutions with no luck, but 'Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery got them first time. The names a bit of a mouthful and the interface is nothing to write home about but who cares it gets the pictures back safely!
