File copying

Selection information

This section displays number and size of the selected files. You may want to check the total file size with respect to the free space available on your target drive. It is not unusual to get a slightly larger amount of data than expected. This effect arises when multiple file versions (previously erased files) or duplicate files (e.g. when the file was moved, it may be recovered in both old and new locations) are being restored.

Destination directory

Specify the target directory (where recovered files will be placed). You may type the directory name, or browse for it using "..." button. ZAR will check that the path specified does exist and is writeable.

WARNING: Avoid copying data onto the same physical device you are recovering data from. This may induce additional data loss. The following considerations apply:

  • If there is some physical damage involved, any additional load on the disk may cause further damage.
  • If logical structures are corrupt, damage cascading effects may occur during writes on the volume.

Existing files handling

"Overwrite" setting is not recommended for general use because of the following side effect: if there are multiple files with the same name in the same directory (typically several file versions - the latest one plus several previously erased versions), an arbitrary one will be picked, possibly overwriting the good file (with an older version in the above example).

Progress indication

The progress bar displays a percentage of total files size processed. File information displays number of files copied and the name of the file under processing.

"Start copying" button

Obviously, this button starts copying files to the target location.

"Skip current file" button

Forces ZAR to skip the current file. Partial files are not deleted but left on the target.

Flushing the disk cache

Once file copying is finished, the window may appear indicating that disk cache is being flushed. This may take considerable amount of time if "Write cache" setting in options is configured for large write cache and/or you are recovering to a slow target (e.g. over the 10 Mbps network). If you abort the processing by quitting ZAR, the write cache will be discarded rather than written to disk. Some files may remain partially copied, and some will be missing. Thus, it is not recommended that you terminate copy process by quitting the program.

Our customers say

I tried a couple of programs to recover images from a "broken" SD card and this one was the only one to recover all the images intact. Every case is different of course but you lose nothing as it is free. Wouldn't be without it now. I have no connection with ZAR btw, just a happy user of the software. HTH
