Source files and recovery options

Specifying files to scan

You need to select file(s) to extract email messages from. When started, Zmeil automatically scans certain locations known to contain message bases. The initial list of the files to recover is then populated with the files found during scan. In case the automatic discovery fails to locate the file of interest, you may use the "Add file" button to add a single file manually. Alternatively, the "Search" button provides the ability to scan arbitrary folder for mailbox files.

Controlling recovery settings

There are two configurable parameters

Source format

Starting with Zmeil 2.1, a new mode "Automatic" is implemented to facilitate setting up a "Source format" parameter. Thus, just select file(s) to extract messages from and start recovering email data without going into detail about a message database file format and the like. Note: you still can specify the "Source format" manually if the need arises.

  • In case the source mailbox is an Outlook Express database (.dbx file), select the appropriate entry (Outlook Express (.dbx)).
  • For Microsoft Outlook (not Express; .pst database), select Outlook (.pst).
  • For any other email program, the Generic mode should be set.

If you specify this setting incorrectly, the recovery will fail (no messages will be extracted), or the recovered messages turn out broken. In certain cases a warning message may appear once the recovery completes. If you are not sure what to select, try performing two separate runs with a different setting, then choose the best of the results.

Search mode, Strict, Average, or Loose.
Controls the "false positive" filtering level.

  • Strict mode uses aggressive filtering. This results in least possible amount of garbage recovered, but may miss certain real messages if they are significantly damaged. Still, this mode is recommended for general use.
  • Loose mode uses relaxed filtering. Anything somewhat resembling the email message will be extracted. However, this brings in massive amounts of garbage. The resulting set of messages requires an extensive manual review. This mode is only recommended with a severely damaged email databases.

Our customers say

I am not tech savy at all... which is how I somehow reformatted the disc in my digital camera on the last day of vacation, and lost all my photos and videos. I came across this download and gave it a try. [...] I did have to refer back to the demo for guidance on selecting the right "physical device". The selections it gave me were unrecognizable to me. The demo helped me understand what I was looking for. All pictures are recovered, and I am grateful! The movies were recovered as pictures (large jpeg files). I can't figure out how to convert them back to movies. Regardless, I am thrilled to have my pictures back.
